Ubuntu Restricted Drivers Manager
I get the same deal, if I install the ATI drivers and reboot all I get is a black screen after the boot splash. I can still SSH into the box, but I haven't found a way to reverse the systems damage. Removing the driver doesn't help, turning off visual effects does nothing, and trying to and there is no alternate GRUB entry created to switch back to.
