KateOS 3.2: Installation Made Easy

In my recent Are You Stupid For Using OpenSuSE? blog entry I mentioned that one of my favorite relatively unheard of Linux distributions was KateOS. Well, this morning I woke up to find out that a new Beta release of KateOS Live is now available. For those that do not know, KateOS is a Polish Linux distribution that is designed to be light-weight by employing the XFce desktop environment. Presently KateOS is ranked thirty-third at DistroWatch.

With today's new KateOS Live 3.2 release it finally included a new installer. The new KateOS installer is graphical (a first for the KateOS project) and should be a huge improvement over its text-based installer for new (and even existing) users. I couldn't help but to try out the new KateOS Live 3.2 Beta, so in this blog entry I have a few thoughts to share about this new installer.

When launching the KateOS Installer, there are even sound effects that are played. The options presented from the main installation screen is partioning your hard drive and then secondly installing KateOS. When partitioning your hard drive, GParted is used as the partioning tool.

After partioning your drive, the KateOS Agent LiveCD Installer wizard consists of the second step. During this process, the root partition is selected, mounting any other drive partions, enabling the linux-swap partition, formatting and boot loader options, language selection, changing your root password, and setting up a new user account.

For KateOS Live 3.2 being the inaugural release with this new graphical installer, the installation mechanism had seemed relatively well polished. During my installation process I hadn't run into any issues or downfalls. The partioning process could still be improved for new users that may not be familiar with GParted, but other than that it's great.

In general KateOS Live 3.2 Beta seems to run very nice and the time I have spent with it so far has definitely been enjoyable. In fact, I am considering installing KateOS 3.2 on a few production machines. Having an installer built into the LiveCD has become the de facto standard for Linux distributions, and it's great to see KateOS finally shine in this area.

In other news, KDE 3.5.6 and GNOME 2.16.3 have now been pushed out to the official Fedora Core 6 repositories.

Good, but SAM Linux is better

SAM Linux gives you the same Xfce and is more stable, usable and fast, in comparison to Kanotix.
